kuratau house

kuratau house

On top of a rolling, east facing, grassed escarpment, this new home addresses the expansive 270 degree views of Lake Taupo, the three volcanoes, a neighbouring reserve and surrounding farmland. The lean rectangular plan allows for both morning and afternoon sun into the living areas as well as distant lake and mountain views as one moves through the house.

To the north and west there are closer views of the developing native gardens surrounding the house which are irrigated with grey water from the septic tank system.

A honed concrete floor, internal blockwork, wood burner and double glazing ensure an even thermal environment in winter. Generous roof overhangs provide shade and sliding doors and windows allow for a controlled summer ventilation. Hot water is provided by the sun, boosted by bottled gas and a heat pump heats the insulated concrete floor slab.

The exterior macrocarpa cladding is weathering naturally and blends into the surrounding tawny grey green pastures.
