The new additions sit in a transition space between the original Cable Car building together with the wider Kelburn residential precinct and the Botanic Gardens. The form and material selections give expression to the building’s location between these two areas. The gapped cedar boarding, glazing and light steel frame are modulated to provide a contemporary interpretation of the scale and proportions of the original building and surrounding residential cladding.

The steel frame allows large spans of glass to introduce views of the Botanic Gardens when observing the restored Grip Car in its original context.
