The Dockside restaurant is operated from a building originally designed as a waterfront wool store on Queens Wharf.

The brief was to incorporate a new canopy system and design a new glazing system and associated structure. The new canopy and structure incorporates the operation of restaurant, aspirations of Wellington Waterfront, TAG, Wellington Regional Council, and the heritage aspects of the building.

The design approach has been therefore to enhance the relationship with the waters edge, and for the new work to both maintain its own expression as a contemporary addition and to express the character and structure of the existing building including, where possible, reinforcing the heritage qualities of the existing building.

The new canopy structural frames are formed with large timber post & beam frames echoing the large heavy timber found in the existing building. The new timber frames are also aligned to the existing structural grid, giving a simple expression to the existing grid and the window module of the existing building.
