taradale house alterations

The preservation of the original house and its NZ Modern architecture was clearly a major factor in the briefing and design strategy. The additions were designed with care so as to not over ride the architecture of the original house. They are recessive in placement, colour and material, not competing with the strength of the Natusch design.

In 1959 Guy Natusch designed a simple single storied three bedroom house. It possessed a low slung roof with extended eaves, simple materials, floor to ceiling glazing, clerestoried gables, glass louvres, large sliding glazed doors all contained within a simply expressed and visible timber structure.

The design approach was to honour and preserve as much as possible the original architecture. Many original components were salvaged and re-used in both the new and altered parts of the house and help connect the new work with the original architecture of the house.
