black rock house
Sited on a spur high above Wellington Harbour, this site is open to expansive views of sea and hills with the consequence that it is exposed to strong winds and weather. The challenge was to design a house with sheltered and sunny outdoor living without isolating the outdoor area from the outstanding aspect the site enjoys.
The house is composed of three wings and a garage forming a U around an open space. These elements are linked by the terrace roof and form a sheltered sunny courtyard orientated to winter solar noon. The harbour view can be experienced from the courtyard through the house.
