eastbourne house

The house occupies a site where the original home existed. The relatively steep slope, northern orientation and views from the sheltered site, led to a design for a tall two level house, with a courtyard formed at the rear of the upper level. While the main orientation is to the sea, the more sheltered and immediate views to the bush behind around the house are also incorporated within the design.

The existing large magnolia tree to the east of the site was retained, filtering the morning sun and provides a sense of scale for the tall house. The study repeats the idea of filtering the light with horizontal cedar boards in front of full height sliding doors.

The family’s main living space is under the lightweight, pitched roof in the centre of the house. The kitchen, study and sleeping spaces are housed in the two square pavilions either side, with the teenage children and their common space downstairs and the adults upstairs.
