ligar bay beach house

The site is an ancient sand dune rising steeply above the beach & road at the natural repose of a weathered dune, and then gently down away from the beach. The narrow section and limits imposed on coastal developments in the area meant the building would be of a lower height level than its existing neighbours.

The new beach house sought to respond to the conditions of the site and clients associations of relaxed beach living. While the beach is an idyllic golden sand bay, with plenty of sunshine, the afternoon wind picks up regularly. The concept was to develop spaces which could be utilised in the various conditions, dissolving the threshold between the inside and outside.

A second access was developed from the rear of the site for car & boat access and parking, allowing the front natural slope of the sand dune unchanged.

The project was constructed on a relatively tight budget, clad in plywood & colour coated aluminium.

The building form was conceived as a low long mono pitched roof gathering the four living spaces, living, dining, kitchen & 'outdoor room'. The building steps down the reclining dune to the sleeping spaces.

The design explores the possibilities of developing a courtyard space within a narrow site. The courtyard offered shelter form the afternoon breeze, control of privacy and the flexibility to open any or all of the living or kitchen space into the courtyard.
