Internal layouts were altered to better orientate family living areas to sun and garden whilst retaining the front entry, halls, stair and a significant proportion of the original rooms. Given the warm and stable Hawke’s Bay climate a new covered terrace extends the outdoor living and gives protection from the coastal breezes that swirl around the nearby hills.

A conscious effort was sustained throughout the project to make the new work seamless with the original. New windows and doors captured views of the bush and sea and ensured good penetration of sunlight throughout the house throughout the day. The authenticity of carpentry and joinery work has been maintained throughout the renovated building and the associated additions.

"...all the convenience of today with the elegance of last century." (NZIA Local Award for Architecture 2003 - Jury comment)

waimarama homestead

The owners of the existing two-storied homestead found the heavily timbered interiors gloomy even on the brightest days. The Victorian orientation of the house to the road (east) and the servant quarters to the back (west) reduced sunlight penetration and compromised the house’s connection to the outdoors. The clients requested more sun, views of the bush and sea, a modern building performance, strong relationship to the garden and new pool, new and upgraded building services (including sprinklers), and a fully renovated and decorated interior. The overriding requirement was to maintain full respect for the well resolved and executed architectural detail of the original house whilst providing for family living in the 21 st Century.
