shoal bay house

shoal bay house

This beach house is a retreat for a busy Hawke’s Bay Family. The design started with the idea of the tent fly against the caravan; a common sight found along the wide Hawke’s Bay beaches.

Acknowledging the onshore breeze the house is organised around a courtyard space, with the kitchen forming the central hub of the beach house activities. From the kitchen space the courtyard, dining area, “outdoor room” and living room can all be accessed. The bedroom wing and guest wing both form lower box-shaped pavilions set against the higher monopitched living spaces.

The house can be opened up, closed down, light is filtered and walls slide to accommodate and enjoy the varied and changeable weather moods and conditions.
